New website!
For a long time — really, since the very start — I’ve been teased by colleagues about not having a proper website.
At the time I didn’t really need one: I had the customers I could handle, and no bandwidth to take on new ones.
What I did have was telephone salespeople offering me a free website with a CMS — provided I only let them host it. A good/bad example is Skandiaweb, which charges 6,000 ex VAT a year just to host a website. You can think of that price whatever you like — I myself charge 200 ex VAT a year for hosting.
So in the wake of that storm of calls I got a little “site” up that contained nothing but the following:
Gitservice.dk declines any and all contact regarding offers of a free website.
But the calls didn’t stop. I have my own web server, which I host my customers on, and I didn’t have the time to take on more customers.
Then it occurred to me: there is a Robinson list for personal phone numbers — why not one for companies? There is! You can register your CVR number for marketing protection through Webreg — and once that was done, the calls stopped. How nice.
The teasing from colleagues did go on, though, and the website ended up being a single graphics file with the company name, uploaded as the site.
Five years have since passed, and a couple of customers have started asking about website design and build services. I’ve spent the last half year trying various CMS systems. The favourite was Drupal — I’d spent 200+ hours on it — but it was simply too slow in the version I had chosen.
In the end, WordPress was the one that won over the summer. It’s the system behind this new website — and now we’ll have to see what it brings.
